Mon école (My School)

Bonjour, je m’appelle Sarah. Je vais à l’école tous les jours. Mon école est petite mais jolie. J’aime beaucoup mes professeurs. Mon professeur de français s’appelle Monsieur Dupont. Il est très gentil. À l’école, j’ai beaucoup d’amis. Nous jouons ensemble pendant la récréation. J’aime apprendre de nouvelles choses chaque jour. Mon sujet préféré est le dessin. Après l’école, je rentre à la maison et je fais mes devoirs.

English Translation:
Hello, my name is Sarah. I go to school every day. My school is small but pretty. I like my teachers a lot. My French teacher’s name is Mr. Dupont. He is very nice. At school, I have many friends. We play together during recess. I enjoy learning new things every day. My favorite subject is art. After school, I go home and do my homework.

Vocabulary Explanation:

  • école: School.

    • Feminine noun.
    • Example: Je vais à l’école. (I go to school.)
    • Plural form: écoles.
    • Note: In French, all nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine). “École” is a feminine noun, which affects adjectives that describe it (e.g., “petite” instead of “petit”).
  • professeur: Teacher.

    • Masculine/feminine noun.
    • Example: Mon professeur de français est gentil. (My French teacher is nice.)
    • Plural form: professeurs.
    • Note: Even though the word is the same for both male and female teachers, you can clarify gender by adding “Monsieur” (Mr.) or “Madame” (Mrs.).
  • gentil: Kind, nice.

    • Masculine adjective. Feminine form: gentille.
    • Example: Il est très gentil. (He is very nice.)
    • Plural forms: gentils (masculine) / gentilles (feminine).
    • Note: Adjectives in French change based on the gender and number of the noun they describe.
  • récréation: Recess.

    • Feminine noun.
    • Example: Nous jouons pendant la récréation. (We play during recess.)
    • Plural form: récréations.
    • Note: Often shortened to récré in casual conversation.
  • sujet: Subject (as in school subject).

    • Masculine noun.
    • Example: Mon sujet préféré est le dessin. (My favorite subject is art.)
    • Plural form: sujets.
    • Note: “Sujet” can also mean “topic” in other contexts.
  • dessin: Art, drawing.

    • Masculine noun.
    • Example: J’aime le dessin. (I like art.)
    • Plural form: dessins.
    • Note: Dessin refers to both the act of drawing and the subject of art.
  • devoirs: Homework.

    • Masculine noun, usually used in the plural form.
    • Example: Je fais mes devoirs après l’école. (I do my homework after school.)
    • Note: “Devoir” also means “duty” or “must,” depending on context, but in the plural devoirs, it refers specifically to school homework.

Grammar Explanation:

  • “Je vais à l’école” (I go to school):

    • vais: First person singular form of the verb aller (to go).
    • Other conjugations: je vais / tu vas / il va / nous allons / vous allez / ils vont.
    • Note: The verb aller is irregular and is used in many expressions, such as aller à l’école (to go to school) or ça va (how are you).
  • “Mon école est petite mais jolie” (My school is small but pretty):

    • est: Third person singular form of the verb être (to be).
    • Other conjugations: je suis / tu es / il est / nous sommes / vous êtes / ils sont.
    • petite: Feminine singular form of the adjective petit (small). Since “école” is feminine, the adjective must agree in gender and number.
  • “J’ai beaucoup d’amis” (I have many friends):

    • ai: First person singular form of avoir (to have).
    • Other conjugations: j’ai / tu as / il a / nous avons / vous avez / ils ont.
    • beaucoup: An adverb meaning “a lot.” It modifies both nouns and verbs and is used before the noun amis (friends).
  • “Nous jouons ensemble pendant la récréation” (We play together during recess):

    • jouons: First person plural form of the verb jouer (to play).
    • Other conjugations: je joue / tu joues / il joue / nous jouons / vous jouez / ils jouent.
    • ensemble: An adverb meaning “together.”
  • “Mon sujet préféré est le dessin” (My favorite subject is art):

    • préféré: Masculine singular form of the adjective préféré (favorite). The adjective agrees with the masculine noun sujet (subject).
    • Feminine form: préférée.
  • “Après l’école, je rentre à la maison et je fais mes devoirs” (After school, I go home and do my homework):

    • rentre: First person singular form of rentrer (to return or go home).
    • fais: First person singular form of faire (to do, to make).
    • Other conjugations for faire: je fais / tu fais / il fait / nous faisons / vous faites / ils font.
